Few had ever truly seen it with their own eyes, it not being as much of a known thing as it was in the present, and those that did found it to be the perfect setting for a horror tale. The way the trees looked black, branches swaying like arms outreached for anyone who dared pass through their territory, the reflection of the moon, dark and almost foreboding. The growls of Pokemon just out of sight threatening those who broke into their home, too sinister a sound to be that of any normal Pocket Monster anyone had ever seen or studied. And in these early times, a rumor rose up through the people. The mysterious lake did not harbor normal Pokemon as everywhere else did. It harbors demons, cruel, unseen entities that would attack or possess anyone who stepped on their land and stayed past their invitation. These lies both attracted and scared the common folk away; however, of those who were drawn in, only half seemed to return to tell the tale. Whatever it was that happened at that lake – demons, twisted Pokemon, hallucinations of the frightened – one thing was sure. It wasn't like any place in the rest of the region. Rest of the world. Immigrants from Kanto compared it to a time in the Pokemon Tower when the spirit of a particularly agitated Marowak tormented the towns people. Roxie had never really seen one of these supposed demons – large, humoid beasts with black skin and red eyes that would appear from the far end of the lake to attack any intruders – but that never stopped her from coming to the body of water to hunt them down. So far, it appeared as though the only residents of the lake were overly aggressive dark and ghost-type Pocket Monsters, more dangerous and less friendly than any Pokemon she had ever borne witness to, but that didn't dash her hopes. They were a bit of a challenge to bat away, but she managed to fend them off for quite some time until her stolen dragon-types grew too tired and she was forced to pack her bags and go home. It seemed they were tiring faster than they were training, even with the battle experience they were getting from these enemies. So it was for this reason, her undying need to catch evidence herself of monsters unfathomable by mankind that brought her to Demon's Lake that night, she munching on a bag of potato chips, cane tapping on the ground insistently, and red eyes gazing through a pair of binoculars she'd snatched from some idiot in Veherna Citadel. So far, there was nothing. Not even a Pokemon to bother her. But she'd only been there for half an hour; she wasn't giving up, yet. “Flygon, take the right,” the Salamance gijinka commanded at what appeared to be rustling of leaves on the other side of water through the magnifying lenses. “Hydriegon, the left. If the rumors I've heard are actually true and something comes to attack us, if I get a single scratch on me, it will cost both of your heads. Do you understand?” Both dragons took their positions on either side of her at the sound of her voice. However, nothing more than a Houndoom appeared from the greenery all that ways away, raising a grumble in the back of her throat and a particularly hard thwak of her cane against the rock she sat on. She said nothing, however, hardly even moving aside from the constant hitting of her dragon-headed stick, only watching and waiting for something part of her knew would never appear. Of course, the majority of her was too proud to give up the sherade just yet. So she'd sit and she'd wait until logic overcame pride and her conscious finally took note of how stupid the whole thing was, giving her only one option: pack up, go home, and pretend it never happened. If that ever happened, that was. If anyone knew the former red-head, they would know that it would take a miracle in order to get her to change her mind. You'd have better luck dressing up as a monster and attacking than making her realize it was all futile. Absentmindedly, Roxie bent over with a huff and muttered under her breath, “I wish that Meryik were here... Not that I'd ever tell the fool, but idiotic plans are better than sitting alone with nothing to do...” And of all the lies she told, she'd hit pretty close to home with that statement. Rearranging sock drawers wasn't exactly her idea of a party, but two masterminds – well, okay, one mastermind and one not-so-mastermind – were better than one, right? Sure, the Seviper gijinka would be more likely to scare away any demons than lure them in if there were even any to be found at the lake, but she couldn't help but think it'd be worth it in the end. In addition, if any sucker came to hunt down some demons themselves, the two would be able to pound them into the ground twice as hard together as she would have alone. Maybe they'd even cry; the last time she'd done that while sitting at the lake, the poor sap almost had, and she had gone solo. Of course, thinking about the feminine male only made her realize how lonely she really was. She could have every Pokemon in the world, but it wouldn't make up for the company she had with someone who understood her; really understood her unlike the fake sort of understanding that backfired that she'd gotten from her cousin. Just the thought alone made her want to gag. So she did, making a gross noise and pointing her finger toward her open mouth a bit. With no outward context, this seemed to confuse her stolen dragon-type Pokemon, each looking at her with equally bewildered looks before she waved her red and white cane in each of their faces. “Who said anything about breaks? Back to keeping watch!” If she wasn't as intimidating as her own Pokemon, maybe she would have been afraid her cruel treatment would backfire some day, too. Maybe. |
